The author describes throughout the passage that, to the Navajo, the sandpaintings are not aesthetic objects. They are, in fact, part of a spiritual rite. However, they do happen to be beautiful (“obvious aesthetic value”), and even though the Navajo try to separate their ritual from art, the sandpaintings do have aesthetic value. (A)
