The control group of “genuine” objects is used to compare a possible
forgery to in order to determine its authenticity. For instance,
to see if a painting is a genuine Vermeer, you would analyze the sample
scientifically and compare the results with the
data from a batch of paintings known for sure to be Vermeer paintings.
