Before Bredius discovered that the painting was a fake, he felt uplifted
and honored in the presence of the supposed Vermeer painting; he obviously
thought very highly of the painting. When it was revealed that the
painting was a forgery by Hans van
Meegeren, however, the painting became “grotesquely ugly and unpleasant.”
Apparently, knowing the history of an artwork prejudices the view considerably,
