The waters are going to have to be still and clear in order for Dr. Muraoka to see the fish.  Turbelent or treacherous (violent or dangerous) waters would not allow this.  Serpentine means winding (like a serpent), so that word doesn’t have much relevance.  Putrid waters would be dirty or disgusting, so that doesn’t have relevance either.  Pellucid means clear (luc means light), so (C) works.
