The expression (x²)² can be simplified by multiplying x² by itself.  (When multiplying the same number with exponents, add the exponents for the answer’s power.)  The answer then is x 4.  Then you want to divide by x² to get the correct answer x²  or C. (To divide the same number with exponents, subtract the exponents for the answer’s power).
