PROBLEM SOLVING
-----------------------------------------------------
This Tipletter is a couple of days late because of a problem
we encountered with a huge, well-known company. Obtaining
a resolution to that problem leads us to discussing PROBLEM
SOLVING.
=> In real life situations
solving a problem is much easier if you focus on the solution
rather than the problem. As an example, we encoutered
a large company making an arbitrary change in procedures without
notification. Rather than worrying about all the problems
this would cause and spending time and energy obsessing, we
sought the solution.
We realized the solution was
available only through that company, so we didn't let anger
or frustration manifest itself until the problem was taken
care of. Focusing thought and energy on the solution rather
than worrying about the problem is more efficient, not to
mention easier on your emotions.
=> In a testing situation,
use similar reasoning. Suppose you have a math word problem.
Too often students keep looking at the problem in its entirety
worrying abobut how difficult it appears.
Don't get caught in this trap.
Train yourself to get the numbers out of the words
so you can start working the problem. This is crucial to solving
word problems. If you leave the numbers in the words you are
playing their game, not yours.
Verbal questions or problems
are vulnerable to the same thinking. Rather than looking at
the question in it's entirety take it apart. Search for clue
words that may indicate the essence of the question. Especially
on the SAT, LSAT, GMAT, and GRE, a single word can be the
difference between an "OK" answer and the "Best"
answer.
