TEST TIPS

Since the test is only days away, go to our List of Last Minute
Tips. Remember you will need to use your User ID and Password.

LAST
MINUTE SAT TIPS
The single most important factor
in improving your SAT (GRE, GMAT, & LSAT as well) score
is familiarity with the test itself. Regardless of where you
are in your test preparation, there is no substitute for being
familiar with the test format and tricky adversarial nature
of the test.
Since you want to familiarize
yourself with the real test we highly recommend only using
real tests. For the SAT,
use "10 Real SATs." The GRE
and GMAT
have software and books available which you can order from
their websites. The LSAT
has previously administered tests available on the website.

GETTING IN! - THE ESSAY
-----------------------------------------------------
You are (or better be) finishing up your applications. And
the dreaded essay is either lying there waiting for further
revision or hanging over your head unwritten. You have probably
already had more suggestions than you want about how to write
it, but we want to be sure you realize several key points.
=> Write it so that it makes you more than a statistic.
Make it interesting, expressive, and use active rather than
passive verbs.
=> In the essay, keep in
mind that the colleges are looking for students who show creativity,
motivation, and an ability to make a real contribution to
their school.
=> Changing one essay around
so that it fits different application cues is dangerous. Remember
that the people reading the application essays are experienced.
They can read where you stretch an essay to make it fit. That's
not to say you can't have a similar essay for different schools.
Just make certain that you give each essay your best effort.
=> Remember that all good
writers rewrite. Rewriting and fine tuning the essay until
you send it will produce the best result. So, even if your
first draft isn't what you want, get a draft written and then
rewrite and rewrite.

COLLEGE TIPS
-----------------------------------------------------
For those of you in college, we'd like to offer several suggestions
regarding scheduling.
=> If there is a class you
really need or want, but it is filled up, go to the first
day the class meets. Frequently students won't show up or
will have changed their minds. Now you are dealing with the
instructor rather than the registrar.
=> Try to avoid scheduling
classes back-to-back. It may be tough for freshmen, but this
allows you time to get to classes, study, review, etc.
=> If you have a big test
or exam coming up, be sure and get a good night's sleep two
days before. For example, you have a big test Friday. Get
a great night of sleep Wednesday. Last minute nerves or studying
may make sleeping the night before difficult. But you are
young enough to deal with one night of bad sleep if you have
a good base of rest.
